Iran Khodro signed with the German company Mahle a contract worth 100 million euros for the design, development, industrialization and mass production of its new engines. Irankhodro’s contribution to the design of this product is 20% and the share of the German side is 80%.
The first engine is 1200 cc and is scheduled to be produced in the 33 months from design phase to production.

The engine is to be designed jointly by the Iranian Research Institute for Engine Design and Engine Design. The Iranian Motor Vehicle Research Company has already designed the first engine designed in Iran jointly with the German FEV company.

One of the mid-term solutions in the automotive industry is the use of small engines to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. However, small engines depend on the very new technologies of spraying and compressing fuel, with only a few companies in the world having such knowledge. Of course, some countries have chosen to use hybrid cars (electric- Gasoline) as a mid-term solution. But the development of hybrid cars is much more complicated than the engine downsizing.
According to Irankhodro, the engines designed and manufactured on the basis of this contract will have 120 to 160 horsepower and will have at least Euro 6 standards for emissions. The fuel consumption of the first three-cylinder engine, which is 1200 cc, is about 5 liters per 100 kilometers.
It has a turbocharged engine and uses advanced fuel injection technology. This technology was first used by Mercedes-Benz in super-sports cars, but was not used in riding cars for many years until this knowledge was restored with the development of computer science and engine management by the Mitsubishi company in Japan.
In this technology, at a time when the car does not need much power, the gasoline mixture and air are very dilute. In order to prevent the impact of a high-tech engine, the fuel mixture blends in a layer around the engine’s pile and increases the need for gas and air to blend.
Companies that use this technology claim that this method can reduce fuel consumption and emissions. However, if the fuel and air management is not done properly, the engine produces nitrogen oxide, which is considered as one of the polluting gases.
According to Irankhodro, after designing a 1200cc engine, three other 1500cc engines will be designed with different fuels, gas and gasoline.
Iran has previously been developing a two-seater (petrol and gas) engine designed by FEV, with the change in Iran’s fuel strategy during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the reign of gasoline instead of gas. Based on gasoline taxis. Some experts consider this change to be a strategic mistake. According to the experts, the gas fuel for Iran has a comparative advantage and less pollution than the gasoline engine.
After that, the Iran Khodro Engine Research Center, in collaboration with the German company Schreck, designed a diesel engine that has not yet been produced due to the problems of non-standard diesel fuel in Iran and advanced engine technology. Of the first three engines, which were designed by the German FEV company, the third engine of 1,400 cubic meters has not been manufactured since more than 10 years.
